Books Worth Reading, Real Intimacy: A Couple’s Guide to Genuine, Healthy Sexuality
We’re excited to begin sharing with you our favorite books in our new series, Books Worth Reading, and hope you will give us a few suggestions for books to review as well
We’re kicking things off by reviewing a book co-authored by our very own Kristin Hodson and Alisha Worthington, with Thomas Harrison called: Real Intimacy, A Couple’s Guide to Healthy, Genuine Sexuality.
Kristin, Thom and Alisha, colleagues and friends, had often discussed the many people with whom they had worked struggling with sex and intimacy within marriage, who desperately wanted clear and helpful information, but were frustrated by the resources available. Finally, the three of them decided to collaborate on a book in which they could address, to a larger audience, topic such as:
- What is Intimacy?
- Why it’s so difficult to talk about sex and how to actually broach the conversation
- How sex and intimacy are different in the 21st century
- The unique challenges pregnancy, postpartum, infertility and blended families present
- How women and men approach intimacy
- How your sexual history impacts your relationship
- The importance of seeing sex as a learned skill
And more…
Each chapter was designed to be able to be a stand-alone chapter so that readers could quickly access the specific topic they needed. Also, each chapter has a long version as well as a “nuts and bolts” section which is a quick summary of the chapter to accommodate “readers vs. non-readers” and still give the couple the ability to meaningfully discuss the content without having read the whole thing. After each chapter there are questions and assignments to help the couple better apply what they had read.
Kristin, Alisha and Thom have been pleased to hear from many readers expressing their gratitude for the book and how many of them have, even after many years of marriage, been able to finally have a real conversation about their sexual relationship without it turning into a fight as well as simply becoming better educated about the art of intimacy and sex on a physical, emotional, spiritual and mental level.
Kristin and Alisha are currently working on a companion to the book about talking to kids about sex. Many who have read Real Intimacy wished they had much of the book’s information before they entered marriage and want to better prepare their children but aren’t sure how and began asking Kristin and Alisha for advice. Thus, a second book is in the works, so look for it soon!
