What Is A Faith Crisis?

If you live in Utah or surrounding states, you may have heard the term “faith crisis” more regularly in conversation, in media, in religious and church settings, at family dinner and among friends. This is a term that has become more popular in everyday language because it describes so well the experience many people have around their religion and or faith. It is sometimes called a Mormon faith crisis but is not exclusive to those in the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints but anyone raised with religious beliefs. But what is a faith crisis?

A Faith crisis is a change or shift in beliefs that have been central to your world view, your values, and your sense of belonging within your family and community. In one qualitative study, they describe a faith crisis as, “A crisis of faith is a painful experience in a Christian's life when he or she begins to doubt his or her beliefs, causing grief and confusion for the individual, as well as a sense of disconnection from God”

A faith crisis can bubble up and be resolved as new beliefs and values get integrated but  can also create a series of disruptions over a long period of time leading to confusion, disorientation, isolation, anger, grief and anxiety. For many, these feelings can cause disruptions in sleep, brain fog, panic, changes in eating and movement patterns.

You do not need to navigate these feelings alone. Seeking out support of an individual therapist or a support group can help you find relief, clarity and calm while you are navigating the storm.

Our team is trained to support you on your faith journey whether you are currently experiencing a crisis, working through faith deconstruction, or navigating new terrain post faith and religion.
