Written by Keeley Doyle, CSW
Do you ever wonder what books therapists keep on their bookshelves and recommend to their clients? This month Keeley Doyle, CSW shares her thoughts on a book that has shaped both her own worldview and the way she helps her clients.
Book: Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents
Author: Lindsay C. Gibson
I have noticed that there are a lot of people (clients or people in my personal life) that had a difficult childhood due to family dynamics. As a therapist, it has been important for me to be able to recognize those dynamics and help people understand their relationships and attachment styles with their parents. This opens the door to greater understanding, greater self-compassion, and healing.
The book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, is a wonderful book for helping people understand what it means to have been raised by emotionally immature parents, and the way it has affected their attachment as an adult. The book provides great journaling exercises to help the reader identify thoughts and healthy communication patterns. I have found the book helpful in understanding the signs of emotional immaturity and how to establish boundaries.
If you’ve ever sought to gain greater insight into your personal attachment style or why your childhood may have felt challenging, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents is worth the read!
