The Healing Group and Anti-Racism

RE: Community Anti-Racism Statement

9/24/2020

As a mental health agency committed to being trauma-informed in every aspect of our practice, we believe wholeheartedly that everyone has a right to safety. Too many BIPOC have disproportionately (to white people) had their right to safety usurped by white people and this is not right.

As a clinical practice whose theoretical foundation is rooted in attachment theory, we equally believe that we require authentic, meaningful connection with others for survival. Racism undermines and obliterates this attachment. BIPOC and their loved ones have repeatedly been robbed of the joy and learning in their relationships with each other when they were/are murdered (in disproportionate numbers to white people) causing additional layers of trauma on top of their generational trauma and other lived experiences.

Therefore, we want to make it abundantly clear that racism and white supremacy have no place in places that wish to be safe and want to survive. Racism and white supremacy are insidious tools whose sole purpose is to destroy humanity.  The Healing Group, our leadership, our clinicians, and our support team are committed to knowing our identity outside of our places of oppression. We acknowledge that inherent in privilege are biases and other limitations and we are committed to identifying and questioning these so that we can do better. We are committed to examining and re-examining the Eurocentric assumptions embedded in psychotherapy and psychological theories and practices so that our clinical work is equally anti-racist.

Those who have experienced racism have experienced trauma and because of that we believe racism is a public health crisis that has a solution all of us can work towards eliminating.
