What’s On Our Bookshelf? “Hold Me Tight” by Dr. Sue Johnson

By Keeley Doyle, CSW

Do you ever wonder what your therapist is reading? Curious about books that therapists find helpful? We’ve got you! Next up in our “What’s On Our Bookshelf” series is Hold Me Tight, by Dr. Sue Johnson.

Hold Me Tight discusses attachment, noticing unhelpful patterns in communication, and how to discuss and meet yours and your partner’s needs. For couples who are struggling, this book helps put into words what many couples experience in terms of attachment, which is at the core of all relationships. It can help you recognize the patterns that you may have in your partnership or relationship, and provide insight on how to get “unstuck”.

This book has been so helpful in my practice with helping others recognize when they are in a cycle and how to get out of it. It’s also great for helping my clients understand how their attachment style might show up in their relationship(s) and how to respond and validate yours and your partner’s experiences.

Are you familiar with attachment styles? Understanding the different attachment styles and how they manifest themselves in a relationship can be a game changer. Once we understand why we feel so affected by what our partner does or doesn’t do can allow us to respond more thoughtfully, rather than react in a way that might do more harm than good. Hold Me Tight is a great starting point for understanding attachment and providing talking points with your partner, and you might find it to be a helpful companion for both individual and couples therapy.
